I’ve traveled to Walt Disney World at least 30 times and visited over 25 of their properties. Below is all the information I’ve gathered for my family of five—bits and pieces I wish someone had shared with me! Disney can be confusing, overwhelming, and stressful for first-time visitors. I highly recommend using a travel agent to help with logistics for newbies. Even though I’m retired from being an official travel agent, I have many sweet, knowledgeable, five-star rated experts I can recommend.

Walt Disney World Overview

Walt Disney World is basically its own magical little world in Orlando, Florida! The entire complex is composed of four theme parks—Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom—and two waterparks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.

Note: The waterparks are not open at the same time. Generally, Blizzard Beach is open during the winter months and Typhoon Lagoon is open during the summer, with exact dates varying from year to year.

Park Overview

Magic Kingdom (Opened 1971) 🏰

Welcome to Disney’s most iconic park! Magic Kingdom is actually the smallest park, but it takes the longest to explore fully. Rides are geared toward kids and nostalgic adults. There aren’t any upside-down roller coasters, but there are definitely “thriller rides” like Tron and Tiana’s Bayou.

Themed Lands: Each land is fully immersive and offers a variety of activities for guests.

Main Street USA: Park entrance
Adventureland: Jungle-themed
Frontierland: Wild West
Liberty Square: Colonial America
Fantasyland: Storybook-themed
Tomorrowland: Sci-fi adventures

Let me be honest—this part can get tricky. There are so many variables to consider, like children’s heights and guest expectations. Are you traveling with thrill seekers? Or nostalgic guests who simply want to do everything? Because of all these factors, there’s no true one-size-fits-all plan.

Number 1: Please send me an email so I can recommend a travel agent who will break this down specifically based on your family’s expectations. This step alone can save you so much time and stress.

Number 2: You will be absolutely exhausted if you try to bounce all over the park. For example, Tron, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Tiana’s Bayou are the top attractions. Tron and Seven Dwarfs are kind of close to each other, BUT Tiana’s Bayou is located on the opposite side of the park.

If you refuse to use a travel agent, please take the time to analyze a map of Magic Kingdom and map out your plan ahead of time. Seriously—do NOT go to Walt Disney World without a plan of attack! 🎢🗺️

Epcot (Opened 1982) 🌐🌍

Many people joke that Epcot stands for Every Person Comes Out Tired—which makes sense since I usually walk 12 miles a day here! The correct acronym is Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow. The park’s iconic silver ball welcomes guests at the entrance.

Park Layout:

Future World: The area near the main gate contains my three favorite rides- Guardians of the Galaxy (my favorite ride at Walt Disney World), Soarin- which is so relaxing, and Test Track.
World Showcase: Countries around the lake, featuring authentic shops, attractions, and cuisine from Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, United States (The American Adventure), Japan, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

Ride Order Tips Based on How You Enter EPCOT

If you are coming in through the main entrance, I suggest power-walking straight to Guardians of the Galaxy. This is absolutely my favorite ride at Disney, and it does not go upside down—bonus! The engineering is incredibly creative. After that, ride Test Track, then walk straight across from the “Silver EPCOT Ball” to The Land and ride Soarin. (It’s located on the bottom level, but you’ll enter on the second level.) From there, continue traveling around the World Showcase, starting with Mexico.
If you are coming in through the back entrance (International Gateway), you’ll either be getting off the Skyliner or arriving by boat or walking from the Swan and Dolphin, BoardWalk, or Beach Club. If you enter this way, I suggest riding Ratatouille since you’ll be so close to France. Then walk through Great Britain and Canada and ride Soarin. After that, head to Guardians of the Galaxy and finish with Test Track.

Hollywood Studios (Opened 1989) 🎬🎥

This park is dedicated to movies, theatre, and music. Walking down Hollywood Boulevard, you’ll see iconic shops representing the Golden Age of Hollywood, with touches of Disney magic!

Thrills: The only upside-down coaster here is Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster-Aerosmith, going almost 60 mph in under 3 seconds! (Note- this is getting reimaged in 2026)
Shows: Favorites include Beauty and the Beast (Broadway-style), Indiana Jones Stunt Show, and Frozen (with adult humor kids won’t catch).
Thematic Areas: Toy Story Land, Star Wars Land, Sunset Boulevard

My Order for Completing Rides Without Lightning Lanes

For Hollywood Studios, immediately walk straight down Hollywood Boulevard and ride Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. After that, head toward the back of the park (go to the right) and ride Slinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania, then continue on to Star Wars Land.

You can absolutely veer to the right and knock out Tower of Terror and Aerosmith (remember, this is changing in 2026), but those lines tend not to be as high as the other attractions mentioned above.

Animal Kingdom (Opened 1998) 🦒🐘

Animal Kingdom is the largest park in Walt Disney World! It’s an upscale, immersive “zoo” that doesn’t smell like a zoo. Conservation and nature are the heart of this park.

Lands & Highlights:

Rafiki’s Planet Watch (Take the train to Conservation Station to complete the free Animation Experience!)
Pandora – The World of Avatar
Africa & Asia
Discovery Island

Must-do attractions: Kilimanjaro Safari, Avatar Flight of Passage, and the Animation Experience at Conservation Station.

My Order for Completing Rides Without Lightning Lanes

For Animal Kingdom, my plan truly never deviates. We always start with Avatar Flight of Passage (not Na’vi River Journey), followed by Kilimanjaro Safaris, and then Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. This route is specific to our family because my kids want to knock out their favorites right away.

If I were taking my time, I would continue along this same general route but complete Avatar Flight of Passage, Na’vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris, then head through Rafiki’s Planet Watch and ride the free 5-minute train to Conservation Station, and finish with Expedition Everest. ***Please be careful on Kali River Rapids-not waterproof jacket or poncho will save you from getting completely soaked- ride this attraction last!

Plan for Each Park

Arrive at least 45 minutes before park opening and make sure you are at the gate entrance.
Take advantage of Extra Magic Hours if staying on Disney property too

Disney Springs

Disney Springs is Walt Disney World’s lively dining, shopping, and entertainment district—no park ticket required! Think of it as a vibrant waterfront town where Disney magic meets great food, live music, and unique shopping. You can stroll along scenic walkways, catch a sunset over the water, and pop into everything from world-famous stores like World of Disney (largest Disney Store in the WORLD!) to specialty spots like The LEGO Store, Gideon’s Bakehouse (hello, legendary cookies 🍪), and Marketplace Co-Op for Disney-themed finds.

Food is a HUGE highlight. Disney Springs is home to some of the best restaurants on property, including The Boathouse, Wine Bar George, Homecomin’, Morimoto Asia, and my favorite- Summerhouse by the Lake, and fun quick-service options if you’re short on time. At night, the area comes alive with live music, entertainment, and bars like Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar and Raglan Road- high energy Irish step dancers.

It’s free to enter, easy to access from Disney resorts, and perfect for:

Arrival or departure day
A non-park day
Date night or family night
Souvenir shopping without the park crowds

In short: Disney Springs is the perfect place to soak up Disney vibes, eat really well, and relax—without needing a park ticket. If you go, the Lime Lot is a great place to park- just make sure you are there by 4:30 p.m. at the latest if you choose to go at night!

Resort Overview- Where to Stay?

Disney classifies resorts into THREE categories: Value, Moderate, and Deluxe.

Value Resorts

Cost: Most affordable
Rooms: Standard motel-style, max 4 guests (except suites)
Dining: Food courts
Pools: Themed, usually without water slides
Transport: Bus service (some like Pop Century/Art of Animation also use Skyliner)
Vibe: Fun, oversized theming, great for budget-focused, park-heavy trips

Resort Options:

All Star Resorts (Movies, Sports, Music) – Music has the only family suite, most budget-friendly
Art of Animation – Standard rooms (Little Mermaid-themed) sleep 4; Nemo, Cars, Lion King suites sleep up to 6 with two bathrooms
Pop Century – Standard rooms sleep 4

Moderate Resorts

Cost: Mid-range
Rooms: Larger than Value, more detailed décor
Dining: Quick-service and table-service options, bars/lounges
Pools: Themed, often with water slides
Transport: Buses; some like Caribbean Beach are Skyliner hubs
Vibe: More immersive, romantic, relaxing

Resort Options:

Coronado Springs (some rooms sleep 6 or more)
Port Orleans Riverside
Port Orleans French Quarter
Fort Wilderness Cabins (sleep 6)

Deluxe Resorts

Cost: Highest
Rooms: Largest, most upscale and they all have the option to sleep more than 4 guests except for Swan and Dolphin.
Dining: Numerous high-end table-service options
Pools: Elaborate, often with bars, grills, slides
Transport: Walkable, Monorail, Skyliner, boats
Perks: Extended Evening Hours, better toiletries, proximity to parks
Vibe: Luxury, convenience, full amenities

Note: DVC Rentals are another option for Deluxe properties. Disney Vacation Club is like a timeshare—you can rent points to save money and stay in larger rooms.

My Top Picks:

Value: Art of Animation – Free Skyliner access to Hollywood Studios & Epcot, themed rooms, suites (Nemo, Cars, and Lion King) sleep 6 with 2 bathrooms.
Moderate:
- Caribbean Beach – Skyliner access, waterslides, newly renovated, Caribbean vibes, and some rooms will sleep 5. Plus, it just smells lovely!!!
- Fort Wilderness Cabins – This offers so much room and I love the small kitchen and separate living room area. These have just been refurbished too! You will need to rent a golf cart to adequately cover the property. This is a must have! Plus, you can take your golf cart to the marina every night and watch Magic Kingdom’s fireworks. (Our kids LOVE to put on their pajamas, watch the fireworks, and then go straight to bed after a long, fun day!)
Deluxe:
- Beach Club: Walk to Epcot/Hollywood Studios, free boats, long waterslide, zero-entry pools, Cape May Café for characters
- Grand Floridian: Monorail & boat access, luxurious pool, upscale experience, walk to Magic Kingdom

What to Pack

Balloons for stroller ID- Cast Members (workers at Disney are referred to as Cast Members) will move strollers around to make space for more guests while you are riding attractions. Thus, make sure you bring a balloon to blow up and tie it to your stroller with yarn or ribbon. That way, after the ride, you can easily identify your stroller and this cuts down on frustration.
Water & Snacks (expensive in the parks)
Sun Protection: Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses
Chafing protection (especially for boys)
Disposable ponchos– you never know when a short, quick rainshower will occur! Additionally, you can use the water rides like Tiana’s Bayou in Magic Kingdom. Don’t even attempt the for the Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom though- nothing will protect you from the torrential downpour of water on that ride! Ha!

*** You cannot pack loose ice for a cooler so do not get any from your resort.

Time to Enter

Arrive at least 45 minutes early! (That means- be at the gate at least 45 minutes early so you probably need to park 1 hour before park opening. While you wait, you can get a granola bar/banana and apply sunscreen.

Use buses, monorail, Skyliner, or boats from your resort.
At Magic Kingdom, buses drop you directly at the park entrance so do not drive or you will then have to park, and either take the monorail or boat across the lake and that will take extra time.

Lightning Lanes

Disney World’s Lightning Lane (LL) system is managed through the My Disney Experience app and offers three paid skip-the-line options:

Multi Pass: Pre-book up to 3 attractions in one park, one-hour return window (actually 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after for 70 minutes). You can also hold 3 at a time. Thus, once you scan in for one multi pass ride, get back on the app and obtain another one.
Single Pass: À la carte, high-demand rides – usually there are one or two rides per park.
Premier Pass: On-demand access to every available Lightning Lane in one park, no scheduling needed to reserve rides. It’s like a one time fee, and it’s good for that one park all day!

Once you obtain these and enter the park, go to the Lightning Lane entrance for each attraction! (Some guests cannot find the correct entrance- don’t go to the Stand By Entrance.

Booking:

Disney Resort guests: 7 days in advance (opens at 7:00 a.m.)
Other guests: 3 days in advance (opens at 7:00 a.m.)

Extras: Multi Pass & Premier include digital downloads of select attraction photos

Dining

Reservations 60 days in advance from your check-in day at 6:00 a.m.
Phone lines open at 7 a.m.—hire a travel agent if you don’t want to wake up early!

Tip: For Magic Kingdom, Seats & Sweets Dessert Party is my top pick—ample seating, desserts, fruit, wine, and Tinkerbell flies above you! I’ve done all the options and this is by far the best one! I was not a fan of the Fireworks Cruise since it was difficult to see the projections on the castle during the fireworks presentation.

Behind-the-SceneTours (Reservations Required!)

There are many to choose from, but these are always the top rated so I completed both and would 100% RECOMMEND both too!

Keys to the Kingdom (Magic Kingdom): 5-hour tour, Utilidors, parade float areas, lunch included.
Wild Africa Trek (Animal Kingdom): 3-hour VIP tour, up-close encounters with giraffes, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, rope bridges, African-inspired snacks.

Private VIP Tour Experience

Duration: 7+ hours
Guests: Up to 10
Perks: Priority Lightning Lane access, private park transportation, personalized planning
Price: $450–$900 per hour
Requirements: Valid park tickets, Park Hopper needed for multi-park visits
Booking: By phone up to 60 days in advance, cancel up to 72 hours in advance without penalty
