We just got back from the most incredible week in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, and I already want to go back. Between adventure days, beach time, amazing food, and the kindest people everywhere we went—this trip had everything.
Sunday, April 5 ✈️ Arrival Day
Travel day done right! We flew smoothly from Atlanta to Liberia, Costa Rica and parked at Fast Park (such a great option for the international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson).
Security was quick, and we were off to a great start. (Travel Tip- Make sure you have your resort confirmation number and the EXACT address of where you’re staying-they WILL ask for it!). Once we landed, our driver with Wanna Ride even stopped for us to grab groceries on the way—a huge win after a long travel day.
We ended the night with a golf cart ride to Chilitos, and the quesadillas absolutely lived up to the hype. Such a fun first night in Costa Rica!
Travel tip: If you’re using golf carts, plan to head out before dark—roads can feel a little tricky at night.
Monday, April 6 🌊 Beach + Fishing Day
A perfect mix of adventure and slow moments.
The boys went fishing and caught Jack Carvel, Snapper, and Bonita Tuna while the rest of us had the sweetest beach morning collecting seashells and just soaking it all in.
We explored Brasilito, popped into a few local shops (Loved- Sea Star Souvenir Shop- small, family owned, and very pleasant attendant), and had a very memorable lunch moment involving a VERY confident iguana (Costa Rica keeps you on your toes).
Afternoons were all about pool time back at the house, followed by pizza for dinner and sunset beach massages. Honestly… this is what vacation dreams are made of.
Tuesday, April 7 🍫🐟 Big Adventure Day
We started the morning learning from a chocolatier, “The Chocolate Master,” Henrik, who came directly to our Airbnb and walked us through the entire chocolate-making process. Super cool and so interactive! Henrik toasted the cocoa beans, taught us how to remove the shells (winnowing), and then ground the nibs into a smooth paste. Then, he hand-churned cocoa on our patio. Afterwards we could add sugar, salt, candy, coconut, and so many other locally sourced ingredients to get our desired taste. My hands still smell delicious and are so smooth!
Later, Mom and I headed to the W for a day pass—pool, beach, and the BEST plantain nachos. The day passes are $150 each and guests get a $100 food/drink credit with the purchase.
Meanwhile… The boys had another MASSIVE fishing day.
Four sailfish were caught, including an 8-foot catch by Max 😳. The others were right there with huge 6+ foot catches too. Truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime days.
Wednesday, April 8 💦 La Leona Waterfall (FAVORITE DAY)
This was hands-down my favorite day of the entire trip!
We hiked to La Leona Waterfall, and it was absolutely breathtaking. We even met the owner who inspired us to go after seeing his YouTube videos—he jokingly called himself the “Mr. Beast of Costa Rica,” which made the whole experience even more fun.

Big shoutout to our guide Sam—he made the entire hike smooth, fun, engaging, informative, and unforgettable.
Afterward, we enjoyed a traditional Costa Rican lunch (rice, beans, chicken, veggies, fresh juice—the works), then wrapped up the day by meeting the Carnes family at the pool and grabbing more pizza from Antonis.
Thursday, April 9 ⛵ Sailing Day
Private sailing with Panache Sailing (LOVED!) was everything we hoped for and more. We went on the morning cruise, but I think the sunset option would have been stunning for the views!
Even with a last-minute location change due to wind, the cove we ended up at was perfect—calm water, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and total relaxation. We had three wonderful guides for our trip and they were all attentive and interactive with our party.
Lunch on board was fresh and delicious, and this easily ranked as my second favorite day of the trip.
We finished the afternoon back at the beach, where several of us (including Luke, Todd, and my parents) enjoyed massages right on the sand—about $40 for an hour or $25 for 30 minutes. So worth it.
Friday, April 10 🌿 Ziplining + Sunset Dinner
We spent the morning at Skyline Canopy Tour ziplining, and it was SO fun—fast, smooth, and no long waits. Definitely a highlight. There are many companies to choose from, but this experience had the best reviews and lived up to it. We didn’t have to wait on a group in front of us nor did we feel rushed. This company was organized well!
We made a quick ice cream stop afterward (a must), then later explored the Westin at Reserva Conchal. Gorgeous property with so much to do. Great atmosphere if you desire an all-inclusive feel.
We ended the trip with dinner at Beach House—coconut shrimp was amazing—and one last unbelievable sunset. The kind you just sit and stare at in silence.
Saturday, April 11 ✈️ Home
Travel day home… but leaving with the BEST memories.
Where We Stayed 🏡
We stayed at Reserva Conchal, and it was the perfect home base.
Between access to Airbnbs, the W, and the Westin, there was always something to do. Our Airbnb had stunning views, tons of space, and (thankfully) a washer and dryer—which is a lifesaver with three boys.
We also rented a golf cart, which made getting around so easy and fun.
And honestly… waking up to howler monkeys every morning and seeing iguanas everywhere never got old.

Good to Know Before You Go 🌴
- Guanacaste in April is sunny, dry, and more golden than lush green
- For greener scenery, go mid-May–June (rainy season) or late Nov–early Dec
- Bring cash (US dollars are widely accepted) + a Visa as backup (AMEX isn’t always taken)
- Tipping is usually 5–10% and sometimes already included (“service charge” = tip included)
- Liberia airport gets VERY hot inside—earlier return flights are better
- Renting a car is helpful, especially if you want flexibility
- Golf carts are fun but be careful on main roads
- Next time, we’re definitely exploring La Fortuna and the rainforest 🌿
Costa Rica was one of those trips that just had everything—adventure, relaxation, family time, and so many unforgettable moments. The people were incredibly kind, and the whole country just has this special energy.
